Minimize data usage with an internet stick?

I'm using an internet stick, and the 'statistic' portion of the software shows almost 1mb being transferred every second, even though I have no programs open other than the 3g software. What could be causing this and how do I minimize it. It should only be a few kb/s while doing nothing....
